Dui Arrest Was The Wakeup Call Peter Needed To Get Help

Peter, portrait

Peter was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He moved out to California where he has been doing consulting work for the past 30 years. He was married for a while and has a daughter who is 25 now.

Peter had a drinking problem that started in his late teenage years. He struggled with it off and on for decades and finally hit rock bottom with a driving while intoxicated arrest that led him to the front door of the mission. “I had never been in a program before. I thought if I really wanted to, I could quit. I quit on my own for stretches of time. This past stretch was about 3 ½ years. I thought I was doing great and then suddenly I wasn’t anymore.” According to Peter, “It didn’t work out so good.”

A few setbacks put Peter in a downward spiral. “Life went from easy going and making sense to suddenly, it wasn’t. I was searching for work and couldn’t find it. I was waking up and wondering what I had done. I knew I needed help. I knew I needed to be sober,” Peter said.

Peter never thought he would be living at a rescue mission with a bunch of men he hardly knew. “It was a new experience for me. I really liked it. I liked the spirit of it. Everyone was really upbeat. Several of the men were really helpful in getting me situated,” says Peter.

As Peter settled into the program, it gave him time to examine his life and his priorities. “At one point I thought I was in a good relationship with God, but then I realized I wasn’t doing much to support that. After coming to the program, I realize there is more to do,” Peter said.

What has been most helpful in Peter’s recovery? Peter answers, “We do devotions every morning, and there are classes that we attend. I’m getting a lot more knowledgeable. It’s been good.”

Peter never imagined he would be starting over at this point in his life. “I’m in my middle to late years, so it’s a struggle to figure out what I’m going to do next. There is resumé help and some mock interviews that we do. I am hopeful that I’ll get back to work,” says Peter.

Peter is taking it day by day and trusting God to restore his life and relationships. “I’m not in contact with my daughter, unfortunately. It’s a struggle,” Peter laments. Many of the men who have graduated the mission’s recovery program have restored relationships with God and their families that they never would have thought possible. Thanks to your support of the mission, Peter has hope for a brighter future.
